Scotch Pine
Also known as the “Scots pine”, Scotch pine is considered an excellent species for Christmas trees. As a young tree, Scotch pines grow naturally in a pyramidal shape and are sheared to create dense foliage. This species is well adapted to extremely diverse climates and holds its needles well from harvest and throughout the Christmas season.
Attributes: The Scotch pine has sturdy needles and branching perfect for supporting lights, garland, and heavier decorations. Needles grow in clusters of two, and vary in length from 1 to 3 inches. Coloring ranges from bright green to dark bluish green. Scotch pine quality is best from 5 feet to 7 feet. Trees should be even throughout with a uniform taper from skirt to tip.
Location: Scotch pine are grown in Oregon and Wisconsin. They are most popular in the Northern U.S., with budget-minded consumers.
Fun Fact: The Scotch pine is the national tree of Scotland.
