You sell Christmas trees, so what does your company do the rest of it year?

This is the most frequent question our employees receive. Though we do have quite a few seasonal employees, because of the volume of business we conduct each year, we have numerous full time employees in various states and countries throughout the world. Throughout the year, the Kirk Company is busy preparing and planning for the upcoming shipping season, attending industry shows, making presentations, overseeing quality control and working with our customers to help them make the most of our services.

Yes, we do. The Kirk Company has a full line of balers and tree netting. Each baler has a slick interior finish and is specially designed to minimize friction and bale trees quickly and easily. They are strong and simple to set up. With them, you can use our exclusive Bio-Netting™ to wrap the Christmas tree for easy transport into your car or truck. Our Bio-Netting™ will remain soft and pliant in any temperature. In 2008 we made our Bio-Netting™ 100% biodegradable.

The Kirk Company also has its full line of Tree Life items. From tree nutrient to Bio-bags™ or an all in one tree care kit, our Tree life line brings added value for each customer. What is the best type of Christmas tree?

This is always a difficult question to answer as each Christmas tree species is unique. The simple answer is the best type is the type that you find most beautiful. We strongly suggest letting your favorite Christmas tree retailer know what types of trees you like so they can provide them to you.

How long does it take to grow a Christmas tree?

Depending on the specie, it can take anywhere from 8 to 10 years to grow a tree 6-7 feet tall.

Where are Christmas trees grown?

Contrary to what many might think Christmas trees are not cut down out of forests. Christmas trees have been farmed on plantations for nearly 60 years. In order to get the correct shape and density, a tree must have the right growing conditions and this environment is best controlled on land that has been specifically set aside for the farming of Christmas trees.

Are Christmas trees a fire hazard?

Any plant that is allowed to dry out is a fire hazard. The key is keeping your tree “wet.” To illustrate this point, the Building and Fire Research Laboratory of the National Institute of Standards and Technology selected a green Scotch pine, had it cut in their presence, had an additional two inches cut from the trunk's bottom, and placed the tree in a stand with at least a 7.6 liter water capacity. The researchers maintained the Scotch pine's water on a daily basis.

A single match could not ignite the tree. A second attempt in which an electric current ignited an entire matchbook failed to fire the tree. Finally they applied an open flame to the tree using a propane torch. The branches ignited briefly, but self-extinguished when the researchers removed the torch from the branches. As NIST fire safety engineers say: REMEMBER, A WET TREE IS A SAFE TREE!
